a roaring fire, warm blankets, a movie for the family, and a glass of red wine for mom. How can you create the picture-perfect winter haven? As fall approaches and the days get shorter, the words warm and cozy start becoming more important. There are many ways to create a cozy living room before winter. Here are a few tips:
Little Fires Everywhere
Wood burning or gas fireplaces are ideal, but there are many solutions to adding fire if you don’t want the expense of venting. Electric fireplaces can work in traditional or modern design styles—with or without a mantel and they don’t require a vent. Then there are candles. If you have little ones, then flameless work. Place candles on coffee tables, end tables, mantles or piled into a non-working fireplace. They might not throw heat, but they sure do add to the ambiance.
Layers and More Layers
Just like with your outfits, layers of fabric add dimension, visual interest and warmth. If you have shades or blinds on your windows, consider adding drapery panels. They can be decorative and stationery or they can pull closed to insulate. Pillows and throws in warm, soft fabrics are perfect accessories to add. Try a fur pillow, fur throw, fur pouf, or fur bench to elevate the cozy factor. And if you have hardwood on your floors, be sure to add an area rug.
Let There Be Light
We all need ambient or general lighting (often recessed or a centrally placed fixture), but the way to create warmth and interest is by layering lighting. Adding lamps to end tables, using floor lamps and wall sconces create visual interest and a warm glow—just be sure to choose a warm bulb vs. a cool white bulb and cozy up.
Curl Up-On Upholstery
What is more inviting than a comfortable velvet sectional? Using upholstery pieces that not only feel soft and warm, like velvet, but also comfortable enough to curl up on with your spouse, your kids or your pets is key. When shopping for a sofa, don’t give up comfort and function to get it fast and cheap. Think about how you sit, recline, cuddle, and use the piece. If coziness is important to you, make sure you are shopping appropriately. The perfect sofa helps create the perfect, cozy living room.
